What is AI SafeStep™?

AI SafeStep™ is a safety-first method for using AI in five steps: Pause, Ask, Check, Protect and Improve. You can use it with any AI tool, on a computer, a phone or a tablet, by typing or by voice.

It is the backbone of every Ask & Answer™ guidebook taught by Andee™ and published by AILI, the AI Literacy Institute.

What are the five steps?

Pause: think before you type. Ask: write your question in plain words. Check: look over the answer and confirm what matters. Protect: keep your private details safe and watch for scams. Improve: review, refine and re-ask.

Do I need any computer experience?

No. The method and the guidebooks are written for people who are new to AI. No technical experience required. No grades. No rush. You are always in charge.

Which AI tools does it work with?

All of them. The five steps do not change when the tool changes. The Ask & Answer™ guidebooks and lesson paths show the steps at work in tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, HuggingChat and Ollama.

Product names describe what each guide teaches. AILI is independent of the companies that make these tools.

Can I use AI SafeStep™ with my voice?

Yes. Many AI tools let you talk instead of type. The same steps apply: pause in a quiet spot, ask in plain words, read the written transcript to check it, never say private numbers out loud, and ask it to slow down when you need to.

On this site, the Read aloud button reads any page to you, and the practice boxes let you speak your question where your browser supports it.

Is it safe to type my personal details into an AI tool?

Keep them out. No Social Security number, bank or card numbers, full medical records or passwords. Describe a letter instead of pasting it, and remove names and numbers first.

Try the privacy check on the Protect page: it runs only in your browser and points out details worth removing before you send.

What if the AI tool gives me a wrong answer?

It happens. AI tools can be wrong or incomplete even when they sound sure. That is why Check is one of the five steps: confirm anything about money, health, legal matters or safety with an official source or a trusted person.

How do I spot an AI-assisted scam?

Pause whenever a message makes you feel rushed, scared or excited. Common warning signs are urgency, gift cards or wire transfers, strange sender addresses, spelling mistakes and requests for codes or passwords. Contact the company or person yourself, using a number you already trust.

Who is Andee™?

Andee is the friendly Computer Helper who teaches the Ask & Answer™ guidebooks. She takes you one small step at a time and names the SafeStep in every lesson. Meet her on the Meet Andee page.

What happened to the safety rules in the older guides?

They are all inside the five steps. Every earlier rule now sits under Pause, Ask, Check, Protect or Improve, so there is one simple path to remember.

Can I print the steps?

Yes. The printable SafeStep card fits on one page. Keep it by the computer, put it on the fridge, or hand it out in a class.

Can my library, school or workplace teach AI SafeStep™?

Yes. Libraries, adult-learning groups, educators and HR teams use the guidebooks with classes, staff and volunteers. See For organizations, or reach AILI at aili.org.

Is this medical, legal or financial advice?

No. AI SafeStep™ is a digital-literacy method, not medical, legal, financial, safety or technical advice. AI can be useful, and it can also be wrong or incomplete.
